Application Details

ELIGIBILITY

  • All applicants must have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to public service, leadership, and/or community involvement.
  • All applicants must be considered students in an accredited college or university.
  • College freshmen and sophomores must show significant interest in American history in both their high school and college coursework and extracurriculars.
  • College juniors and seniors must be history majors or American studies majors with an American history concentration.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

College freshmen and sophomores must submit

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation. One letter must be from an American history or American studies professor or high school history teacher. Only professional and academic recommendations will be accepted. Recommendations from family or friends will not be considered.
  • A personal statement in the form of a 500-word academic autobiography giving special attention to achievements in American history and public service
  • An academic writing sample of 3–5 pages
  • Unofficial high school and college transcripts

College juniors and seniors must submit

IMPORTANT DATES

  • The application for the 2019 award opened on September 24, 2018.
  • The application for the 2019 award will close on April 15, 2019.
  • The 2019 program will be held June 2–7, 2019, in New York City.
